The Start of Bossa Nova
Although the Latin rhythms of Bossa Nova music is mostly associated with the country of Brazil and other parts of South America, the style is based upon the Cuban samba rhythm.
Melodic and elegant, Bossa Nova is performed to give a soft, romantic feel; drawing images to your mind’s eye of rolling green hillsides, lush rain forests, and cozy villas.
Commonly used instruments to help deliver this soft feel are the Saxophone, Flute, Acoustic Guitar, and Piano
In the ‘60’s, many Jazz Musicians began to integrate Bossa Nova into their sound. Musicians like saxophonists Stan Getz and Gato Barbieri, flutists Herbie Mann and Dave Valentin, and vocalist Astrud Gilberto, whose success in the United States came with her recording of “Girl from Ipanema”.
